sky fall by newstarlite

newstarlite is one amongst a myriad of different pseudonyms and projects created by Vivian Raine, one of the most frequent creatives in the vaporwave scene. This third particular instalment of the alias seeks to look back to the early days of the genre, when artists such as INTERNET CLUB and Laserdisc Visions would piece together subtly emotive collections of video game sample loops, resulting in a substyle that would come to be known as segahaze. sky fall is 24 minutes of prime-era segahaze, starting with the patient waiting room intro of guru palace, and the curiously explorative object pulse, before you are given tracks to remind you of the comforts of a modest beachside city.

The 10-minute centrepiece and penultimate track infinite death spiral sees the mood of a peaceful sunset there progressively fading away, the serene loop soon swirling & echoing around you as you’re submerged into the empty, unfinished corners of the world map, all after exploring the uncanny virtual city. The wind feels almost vaguely real to you, and the store brand blur & morph into one another, and by the end, you are left on your lonesome to reckon with what is even real, until you’re cut away from the entire experience. That is only one way to interpret the craft of this gorgeous vaporwave throwback.
