From two of the most active American producers in the D.I.Y vaporwave cyberspace comes the second edition of UNTOWARD's eccojams split series UNDERSEAS. Vivian Raine and Jaiden Macintosh are two rising artists with increasingly expansive encyclopedias of side-projects and alternate pseudonyms, all taking on various forms of experimental & electronic music, including vaporwave, nightcore, ambient, noise, sound collage, drone, and many more. Their constant rapid-fire approach to sonic creation leaves sporadic results ranging from obscure shitposts to mind-expanding works of art, which makes their first joint collaboration on this label all the more appropriate.

Despite their dense parallels, it’s the differences that make this split release all the more compelling. Vivian’s opening half, produced under the shorthand raine, takes on a starkly rock-centric approach with her samples, making a strong case for the “vaporgaze” sound with fuzzy, haze-induced guitar loops that feel heavy in both weight & emotion, additionally carried by buried vocals that just barely peek through the curtain. By contrast, under the pseudonym café 夜に訪問する, Jaiden primarily sources his samples from the realm of synthpop, and though the production has more clarity by comparison, they’re no less psychedelic & murky, leading the originally bright tunes to match the darkness of the record’s preceding half. Through these differing sounds, the two sides convey sparse atmospheres that are naked with despondence yet underlined with a quiet serenity that’s sure to satisfy.
