Soulseek Recognizant by Pursuing Paradise / .mp3neptune
Introducing the first edition of UNTOWARD’s brand new split series, UNDERSEAS, where two artists are brought together to bring a new split collection of eccojams to you! This inaugural instalment combines the talents of two vaporwave legends to deliver a sombre, contemplative reflection on vivid internet memories now dulled & faded from the separation of time, and it’s called Soulseek Recognizant. The inspiration for this joint album stems from watching many old videos from decades past, only to find that their recollections had much more clarity than the videos ever delivered on their low-bitrate quality.

Elevation returns to UNTOWARD as Pursuing Paradise, their eccojams pseudonym made famous by albums released via business casual and Bedlam Tapes. Featuring a catchy cameo from his hypnagogic crooning persona Icing Expert, their eccojams for the record’s opening half are as hooky & dreamy as ever, with samples drenched underwater and warped until they’re worn down & dispirited. The album’s second half is contributed by friend of the label, .mp3neptune, who takes the spirit of eccojams and spreads them out across the vast expanses of space, leading to more liminal & hazy explorations of their sprawling sample-editing craft, decaying their bittersweet sounds with corruptive glitches before ultimately concluding with a direct homage to early YouTube virality. Both artists take direct inspiration from the metamorphosing landscape of EDM at the turn of the 2010s, and the results spin their sources on their head to provoke the mournful side of the gaps between their once explosive celebrations. This series of split album releases could not begin with a synergy that is any stronger than this.
